Immersion Joins COMET Automotive Technology Partnership Program; New Human Machine Interfaces Adopt Touch Feedback in Automotive Industry
SAN JOSE, Calif.--Nov. 1, 20030, 2003--Immersion Corporation , a leading developer and licensor of touch feedback technology, today announced that it has joined the Community Enabling Telematics (COMET) partnership program, a cooperative association launched by Renesas Technology America Inc., a U.S. subsidiary of Hitachi Ltd. and Mitsubishi Electric Corp. Accelerating the proliferation of advanced telematics and car infotainment system (CIS) products since October 2002, the association is now expanding to include 10 emerging technology companies, including Immersion and Wind River."As a selected COMET partner, Wind River is committed to delivering an integrated platform-based telematics & infotainment solution," said Marc Serughetti, director of Marketing for Automotive, Industrial, Aerospace and Defense at Wind River Systems, Inc. "With the growing interest in haptics, we are excited that Immersion is working with us to build touch feedback solutions based on the Wind River Platform for Car Infotainment. This will effectively accelerate time-to-market and reduce the risk associated within the integration process."
The combined effort of the COMET association takes a variety of human machine interface (HMI) technologies like touch feedback, graphic display, speech recognition, audio and chip set technologies and develops them into an all-in-one solution. The resulting integrated demo helps give system engineers more freedom to develop next generation cars while speeding innovation and time to market. Previously, most automotive system engineers had to work with individual technologies instead of the comprehensive integrated solution provided by COMET.
"Through the COMET initiative, system engineers will now have easier access to Immersion's touch feedback technology as well as a variety of complementary telematic technologies," said Dean Chang, chief technology officer and vice president of Technology Adoption and Partner Services for Immersion. "This will help give the automotive industry an opportunity to evaluate and develop an all-in-one integrated system of technologies as opposed to forcing buyers to imagine how the technology will work together. This will ultimately help shorten the car development cycle, saving time and money."
Immersion's invitation to join the partnership program follows the successful introduction of its touch feedback technology into the iDrive system in BMW's 7 Series cars, soon to be available in the 5 Series. Similar technologies have been introduced to mid-priced as well as high-end cars, including Rolls Royce's Phantom and Volkswagen's Phaeton.
Immersion's touch feedback technology, commonly referred to as force feedback, is well suited for secondary automotive functions such as air conditioning, heat, navigation and audio controls. These new touch-enabled control features can help improve safety by eliminating the need for drivers to visually confirm that they have selected a desired function. Drivers replace visual cues with tactile feedback felt through their hands. This in turn makes it easier to concentrate on driving without needing to take their eyes off the road. The sense of touch deepens and enriches a user's driving experience by engaging more senses than just sight and sound, offering more intuitive performance and better control.
