Warren Johnson Starts Eighth in Pomona

Event: 39th annual Auto Club of Southern California Finals
Location: Pomona Raceway
       Pomona, California
Day/Date: Saturday November 8, 2003

On the strength of a 6.780-second, 204.85 mph run recorded on Saturday morning, Warren Johnson qualified his GM Performance Parts Grand Am eighth for Sunday's final eliminations of the Auto Club of Southern California Finals in Pomona, CA. After posting a best elapsed time of 6.799 seconds during the first two days of eliminations, Johnson knew improvement would be necessary to ensure a position in the top half of the field, and responded with his best pass of the last three days.

"We're still working to find the right tune-up for this particular engine. Its not running as well as it should on the bottom end of the track, which naturally has us a little concerned. It has a lot of runs on it, and we had originally brought it with us as a spare, but we pressed it into service when the other engine didn't perform in Las Vegas.

"Our GM Performance Parts Grand Am is as fast as anyone in the back half, so it's just a matter of getting it tuned up on the bottom end. We have a few adjustments we can make to make it turn the tire harder, including shifting some weight. The conditions for tomorrow are supposed to be similar, so we'll wait until we get to the track in the morning, see what we have to work with and take it from there."
