CANNON SEVENTH IN POMONA QUALIFYING
POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 7, 2003) - Oakley Time Bomb Dodge Stratus Funny Car
driver Scotty Cannon held on as low qualifier yesterday until the 20th car
of 24 (largest Funny Car field this year) went down the track in yesterday's
first qualifying session for the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA
Finals. By the end of the session his 4.872-second elapsed time at 314.31
mph was good for No. 5.
In today's second qualifying session Cannon posted another stout pass of
4.971/303.71, but dropped to No. 7. His partner in the other lane was
newly-crowned Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon, who "won" that round with a
4.859/316.45.
"We had some problems in today's session," said Cannon. "We had some
ignition problems this time, but it still ran OK. It went down the track. If
it were somebody in the other lane who had gone slower and it had been
Sunday I'd have won," he laughed. "I didn't smoke the tires."
