Public Invited to 'Electric' Weekend in Long Beach Hosted by Electric Drive Transportation Association
LONG BEACH, Calif., Nov. 7, 2003 -- The public is invited to test drive more than 60 clean, cutting-edge electric drive products at the Public Days for EVS-20: Powering Sustainable Transportation, taking place in Long Beach on November 15 and 16, 2003. Attendees at either one of the two "electric" Public Days will get the chance to win a year's free use of a Honda Civic Hybrid from Honda, the title sponsor of Public Days.
EVS-20 Public Days, at the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center (300 E. Ocean Blvd. in Long Beach), will be held Saturday, November 15 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday, November 16 from noon to 4:00 p.m. For the $10 admission fee (children 12 and under are free), attendees can participate in the largest public "Ride 'n' Drive" ever assembled of fuel cell, hybrid electric and battery electric vehicles, plus electric bikes and scooters. Vehicles available for test drives will be provided by Honda, Toyota, General Motors, Ford, DaimlerChrysler, Nissan, Hyundai and many others. Attendees must be 18 and over with a valid driver's license to drive vehicles. Children over 12 who meet a certain height requirement can ride the bikes and scooters with the permission of a parent or guardian.
The public also can tour a full Exposition Hall crowded with more than 100 exhibits from companies around the world. The organizers are making this event not only educational, but also fun by providing entertainment, celebrity appearances, and static displays in the "Ride 'n' Drive" area that will feature vehicles from local colleges/universities, local utilities and businesses and even a 1930 antique EV! In addition there will be hydrogen refueling demonstrations on both Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday, November 15, an opening ceremony will take place at 11:00 a.m. featuring actor and electric drive advocate Ed Begley, Jr., plus Long Beach Vice Mayor Frank Colonna and other officials. EVS-20 organizers will present the City of Long Beach with two zero-emission neighborhood electric vehicles manufactured by Global Electric Motorcars (GEM). Saturday attendees also will have the opportunity to win free tickets to the Long Beach Ice Dogs' hockey game that night, as well as free tickets to the Aquarium of the Pacific. Spike, the Ice Dogs' mascot, will be on hand from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, and the Long Beach Press-Telegram, a media sponsor, will have a booth onsite on Saturday. On Sunday, November 16, media sponsor KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO will host a booth for attendees.
"Honda is proud to sponsor EVS-20 Public Days, and hopes to see a large turnout from Southern Californians to experience, first-hand, electric drive technologies available today and on the horizon for tomorrow," said Stephen Ellis, Manager of Alternative-Fuel Vehicle Sales and Marketing for American Honda Motor Co., Inc.
