NHRA Thursday: The First Day of Qualifying in Pomona Finds
Warren Johnson in Second
Event: 39th annual Auto Club of Southern California Finals
Location: Pomona Raceway
Pomona, California
Day/Date: Thursday November 6, 2003
Qualifying for the Auto Club of Southern California Finals got underway on Thursday at Pomona Raceway, and Warren Johnson wasted little time in putting himself in a good position for Sunday's final eliminations. With his GM Performance Parts Grand Am dispalying the ACDelco scheme that he ran in Las Vegas, Johnson rocketed down the track on his first attempt in 6.799 seconds with a top speed of 204.23 mph to capture the second position after the first day of qualifying.
"We came back with the same set-up that we used at the Winternationals, but the track was decidedly better than it was back then, at least in the early part of the run, and that cost us a little bit of e.t.. Our GM Performance Parts Grand Am was as fast as any one in the back half, but we gave up about two hundredths in the front half. Still, it's a solid run that will keep us in the show, so we don't have to concern ourselves with any changes in the weather, and gives us a good baseline to tune from. We're in good shape."
