United Plastics Group Announces Two Plant Closures; Plant Consolidation Necessary for Market Growth and Future Globalization
WESTMONT, Ill.--Nov. 6, 2003--United Plastics Group Inc. (UPG), a full service manufacturer of plastic injection molded products and services worldwide serving the industrial, automotive, electronics, medical and consumer markets, today announced the closure of its injection molding plants in Bensenville, Ill., and Guadalajara, Mexico, which primarily serviced local electronics customers. The shift to Asian suppliers facilitated the closures. As the industry's leading supplier of low cost, high-quality injection molded products and services, UPG's plant closing reflect its current business initiative to develop other market segments while continuing to expand in strategic regions around the globe. These expansions include additional facilities in China in 2004 as well as further investments in the automotive and medical business in North America."United Plastics Group will continue to aggressively pursue our world-wide growth strategy. A large part of this strategy hinges on manufacturing flexibility and customer service. In this economy and environment, we didn't feel that either of these locations fit well with our long-term strategy for growth and profitability," stated Shannon White, CEO.
Both facilities will cease operations by the end of the year, with 286 employees affected. A separation package, including severance pay, will be provided to affected employees. UPG will also work with the local workforce development authorities in each location to assist personnel in finding new employment opportunities.
The closures were announced internally to all employees and customers on Nov. 6, 2003.
