New Toyota and Lexus Products Fuel Strong October Sales

TORRANCE, Calif., Nov. 3, 2003 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported strong monthly sales of 151,157, an increase of 11.7 percent over last October. The success of several new generation products launched over the past year including the Sienna van, 4Runner mid-size sport utility (SUV), Prius hybrid sedan, and the Lexus RX 330 luxury-SUV helped ignite the rise in sales. Calendar-year-to-date (CYTD) sales total 1,565,166, an increase of 5.9 percent compared to the same period last year.

"Industry sales in October are traditionally soft. That's especially true this year in California, the nation's number-one vehicle market, where some consumers are deferring purchases until a controversial sales tax issue is resolved," said Jim Press, TMS executive vice president and COO. "However, we still anticipate a very strong finish. A sustained up-tick in economic indicators, coupled with a wealth of strong new products launched through out the year, has fueled surprisingly high year-to-date sales."

The Toyota Division recorded October sales of 128,692, an increase of 7.9 percent.

Toyota sales were led by America's best-selling passenger car, the Camry, with 33,482 units sold, an increase of 1.3 percent. The launch of the all-new second-generation Prius hybrid sedan got off to a record-setting start by posting its best-ever sales month with 4,085 units sold after only two weeks on sale. The sales record represents an increase of 130.1 percent and shatters its previous monthly record set last March, of 2,532.

Scion, the new car marque from TMS, reported September sales of 1,276 units. CYTD sales for Scion total 7,690.

Toyota Division light trucks recorded strong October sales of 61,268, an increase of 19.5 percent. The all-new Sienna van recorded its best-ever sales month with 12,440 units sold, an increase of 142.2 percent. Sales of the Tacoma compact pickup were also up with 12,167 sold, an increase of 2.6 percent. The 4Runner mid-size SUV also enjoyed a strong selling month with 9,750 sales, up 81.8 percent.

The Lexus Division enjoyed best-ever October sales of 22,465, an increase of 40.1 percent. Lexus passenger car sales stood at 11,400, an increase of 10.0 percent. The ES 330 luxury sedan recorded strong sales of 5,809, up 19.7 percent. The flagship LS 430 luxury sedan recorded 2,751 sales for the month, an increase of 27.7 percent. The SC 430 hardtop convertible posted sales of 1,023 units sold, up 24.5 percent.

Lexus light trucks recorded best-ever October sales of 11,065, an increase of 95.0 percent. The all-new RX 330 luxury SUV achieved best-ever October sales with 7,332, up 51.1 percent over the same period last year. The all-new GX 470 luxury mid-size SUV continued to post strong sales with 2,686 units sold. The LX 470 full-size luxury SUV also recorded increased sales of 27.8 percent with 1,047 sold.

Sales of North American-built vehicles accounted for 61.9 percent of total October sales.
