Grand American Champions Weekend from Doran Racing
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Nov. 1 - Although Doran-Lista Racing team owner
Kevin Doran admitted he would h3ve liked the order to be reversed, he was delight-
ed when the DORAN JE4s he designed and built finished first and second Saturday
in the Grand American Champions Weekend at Daytona I nternatbnal Speedway.
With their overall victory the Bell Motorsports DORAN JE4 Chew #54 of
Forest Barber and Terry Borcheller won the two-hour-and-45-minute race by a mar-
gin of 13.998 seconds over the Doran-Lista Racing DORAN JE4 Toyota #27 of Didier
Theys and Bill Auberlen. The victory was just icing on Bell Matorsports' cake,
because they also sealed up the Daytona Prototype team championship and
Borcheller won the Daytona Prototype driver championship.
The Doran-Lista team, which was making only its fourth start with its DORAN
JE4 Toyota, was the star of the show for the first two-thirds of the race. Auberlen was
able to pull away from the field easily and looked uncatchable.
Fuel mileage came into play as the race progressed, however. Although the
Doran-Lista Earn made all three d its pit stops under full-course yellows, the team wait-
ed until there was just one lap to go until the green waved on its third stop in order to
have enough fuel to go the rest of the distance. That shuffled Thsys back to seventh,
but somehow the Scottsdale, Ark-based driver was able to record one of his famous
charges at the end to nail down second with just one lap to go when Stu Hayner ran
out of fuel in his Mustang.
David Donohue provided the most trouble for Theys in the last stage of the
race, providing for some thrilling videotape. "I caught David and he tired to hit me,
50 I paid him back," Theys said afterwards. "If you want to start something, then
O K , 1'11 continue it," he warned firmly.
Auberlen had an incident with JC France in the morning warm-up that caused
right-side suspension damage to the car, but he had a much easier r3w than Theys did.
"When I w3s in the car, it was better than it had been all weekend," Auberlen,
of Hermosa Beach, Calif., said. "I could just walk away from everybody. The balance
was good, the power was good and the Goodyear tires were good."
"It was a fantastic season for the Bell Motorsports team, and I want to con-
gratulate everybody on that team and especially Jim Bell, Forest Barber and Terty
Borcheller," Doran said. "They won six races and the championship and they all did
a great job, and they certainly made me proud.
"As for our team, we were good early but we just weren't quick enough today
to beat Terry and Forest," Doran added.
"Our Goodyear tires were fantastic like they always are. We have the best
tires, the best car, a fantastic engine partner in Toyota and look at that driver line-up.
I expect we'll get back to victory lane here pretty quick," he added.
