Dan Wheldon Up For Autosport Rookie of the Year Award
Fans can place their vote at www.autosport.com
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (October 31, 2003) - Dan Wheldon, the 25-year old English
racing driver for Andretti Green Racing who captured his fourth consecutive Rookie
of the Year award for his performance in the 2003 Indy Racing League IndyCarTM
Series, is in line for another prestigious rookie award. Wheldon is one of just seven
international drivers short-listed by the prestigious British motor racing weekly
magazine, Autosport, for their 2003 Rookie Driver of the Year honor.
Supporters of Wheldon can vote for him by visiting www.autosport.com and clicking
on the 'Vote for your autosport.com Rookie of the Year' icon at the bottom left of the
home page.
Furthermore, Wheldon is also on the short-list for Autosport magazine's 'British
Competition Driver of the Year' award. Readers of the magazine can vote by turning
to page 59 of the October 23 issue of Autosport and completing the voting form.
The winners of the famous 2003 Autosport Awards will be announced at a gala
function in London on Sunday, December 7.
Since racing successfully against the likes of Jenson Button in go-karts, and then
becoming a regular race winner in the junior British single-seater formula in the late
1990's, Wheldon has carved out an impressive career in the USA.
In 1999 he won the U.S. Formula Ford 2000 Championship and took his first Rookie
of the Year award. In 2000 he progressed to CART Toyota Atlantic, came second in
the series and was Rookie of the Year. The following year - having moved up to
Dayton Indy Lights - Wheldon was runner-up in the series and, once again, Rookie
of the Year.
This year, Wheldon has raced at the highest level in the USA, contesting the last 14
rounds of the 16-race IndyCar Series for Andretti Green Racing at the wheel of the
#26 Klein Tools/Jim Beam Dallara/Honda/Firestone and was awarded the Rookie of
the Year award last Saturday night. This week, Andretti Green Racing announced
that the team has re-signed Wheldon to pilot the #26 car in the 2004 IndyCar
season.
