Holden and Quinlan are two of 10 Delphi executives to be certified in the last five months by Shainin LLC, a consulting firm based in Livonia, Mich., that helps manufacturing businesses reduce costs associated with technical problems. Shainin's proprietary management techniques work in conjunction with lean manufacturing and Six Sigma methods.
To become certified as a Top 5 Executive, Holden and Quinlan demonstrated that they could effectively recognize the true source of a problem, identify and implement solutions, set priorities and monitor results. These skills foster the creation of a problem-solving culture at Delphi that directly supports the Delphi Manufacturing System and lean initiatives.
Holden and Quinlan have established and monitored the implementation of Top 5 Initiatives at many of Delphi Safety & Interior Systems' North American operations. They have fostered the development of Shainin Red X Masters and Journeymen and led the development of a support structure to drive a problem- solving culture at Delphi Safety & Interior Systems.
James A. Bertrand, president of Delphi Safety & Interior Systems, recently presented the awards and congratulated Holden and Quinlan on their accomplishment.
"Shainin problem-solving techniques are aimed at improving our manufacturing processes, increasing productivity and improving quality," Bertrand said. "The end result should be to satisfy our customers, and Shainin techniques strive to do that. John and Kevin's leadership in Shainin will continue to encourage other Delphi employees to increase their effectiveness in using these techniques."
Shainin has five levels, with the fourth and fifth levels, the Top 5 Manager and Top 5 Executive, respectively, designed for executives and chief engineers. At the Top 5 level, executives must sponsor and support Shainin projects and demonstrate that they can drive Shainin into the culture of their organization using the Top 5 process.
