Delphi to Supply World's Most Advanced Electronic Unit Injector, E3, Into Japan Market

TROY, Mich., Oct. 28, 2003 -- Delphi Corporation has been awarded a contract by Nissan Diesel Motor Co. to supply diesel engine management systems (EMS) for heavy-duty, 2004 model year truck applications. The EMS systems will consist of Delphi's new E3 Electronic Unit Injector (EUI), along with the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and engine management software. This Delphi technology will help enable Nissan Diesel Motor Co. to meet strict emissions regulations starting in 2005.

Delphi's E3 is the world's first electronic unit injector to provide variable injection rates, which allows optimization of combustion, hence helping to increase performance and balance between superior fuel economy and reduced emissions. The system also allows multiple injections giving engineers the opportunity to introduce pilot, close-coupled pilot, main split and late post injections in addition to the main injection event.

Delphi is building on the success of its revolutionary E1 electronic unit injector for heavy-duty diesel with the introduction of a sophisticated "smart" version, the E3. The result of an advanced development program, the E3 uses two electronically activated high-performance valves to allow precise shaping of injection events, leading to improved fuel economy, increased performance, and substantially reduced emissions compared with today's current production EUI. These electronically activated valves are fully programmable and are controlled by the ECU.

Suitable for diesel engines between 9 liters and 16 liters, Delphi's electronic unit injector technology helps provide savings for vehicle operators. When an injector needs to be replaced, Delphi's unique system allows it to be replaced individually, rather than replacing all six or eight injectors with matched units as is required with traditional EUI technology. This is achieved by individually testing each injector at Delphi's facility and laser etching its performance characteristics onto the terminal block. This data is then read into the engine management unit, providing accurate fueling and timing characteristics for each injector. The same technique is used when the injector is initially installed in the engine at the facility, greatly increasing the accuracy of fuel metering and simplifying production logistics.

An electronic unit pump version of E3, with a separate injector for cam-in-block applications, is expected to be available in late 2004.

Delphi has secured more than $1.5 billion in future new business for Commercial Vehicles (CV) during the first six months of 2003. Delphi has steadily increased its CV business during each of the past three years. Last year, the company booked $1.1 billion of new CV business, up from $900 million in 2001. The majority of this year's new business falls into six product areas: diesel fuel injection; diesel electronic control units; and audio, safety, climate control, and electrical/electronic distribution systems.

Delphi offers the full product range for diesel engines, and supports its diesel customers from nine diesel applications facilities in Europe, Asia Pacific, and the U.S. Delphi has nearly 8,000 employees working to further advance diesel technologies.
