Silicon Laboratories Introduces Industry's First 100% CMOS Satellite Radio Tuner; Si2210 Reduces Board Space By 60% and Component Count By 70%
AUSTIN, Texas--Oct. 2, 20037, 2003--Silicon Laboratories Inc. today announced the Si2210 IC, the industry's first CMOS satellite radio tuner. The Si2210 leverages Silicon Laboratories' proven radio frequency (RF) technology to provide the best performing and most integrated Satellite Digital Audio Radio Services (SDARS) tuner on the market. Implemented in 100 percent CMOS, the Si2210 reduces the required board space by 60 percent and component count by 70 percent, significantly lowering the bill of materials for SDARS applications. With the Si2210, Silicon Laboratories provides a complete RF/IF tuner, the core IC responsible for receiving radio signals for coast-to-coast, uninterrupted, satellite radio service. Silicon Laboratories, a pioneer in RF solutions in CMOS for cellular handsets, has been the leading supplier of integrated RF synthesizers since the launch of satellite radio. The company's patented RF technology is a key enabler in this rapidly growing consumer market, which is being driven by the adoption of major automotive manufacturers and is expected to add millions of subscribers.
"Silicon Laboratories' history of innovation in RF technology and the company's ability to meet the rigorous requirements of satellite radio has enabled more compact and cost-effective satellite radio solutions for the consumer," said Will Strauss, president of Forward Concepts, a market research firm. "This innovation is spurring the tenfold growth satellite radio is expecting over the next several years as consumers readily adopt this revolutionary technology."
"Silicon Laboratories' new tuner is a prime example of our ability to leverage extensive mixed-signal CMOS RF design expertise into new, growing markets where we can provide customers with innovative, high-performance solutions," said Dave Bresemann, vice president of Silicon Laboratories. "Our easy-to-use Si2210 provides customers with a flexible solution that meets both the stringent technical requirements of satellite radio and intense quality requirements of automakers."
Silicon Laboratories' new Si2210 tuner solution includes the Si2210 tuner and the Si2200 RF/IF synthesizer. The Si2200 integrates both RF and IF voltage-controlled oscillators, varactors and loop filters, eliminating the need for external VCO modules. This high level of integration results in ultra low phase noise and spurious noise while providing the industry's fastest settling time.
To simplify design, the Si2210 implements a highly integrated superheterodyne architecture, allowing SDARS radio manufacturers to significantly reduce cost while leveraging existing and future baseband technology platforms. The Si2210 also includes a standard SPI digital control interface that allows software programmability of satellite radio configurations and continuous monitoring of RF functions and antenna fault conditions.
Silicon Laboratories' satellite tuner product offering also includes the Si2211 for next generation baseband processors and the Si2212 for diversity applications. Using the Si2211, customers can further reduce the number of external components required by implementing a single SAW architecture, while the Si2212 provides the most advanced diversity antenna solution for the SDARS market.
