LAS VEGAS (Oct. 24, 2003) - Scotty Cannon produced an impressive run in this
evening's second qualifying session at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor
Speedway, when he scorched the quarter-mile in his Oakley Time Bomb Dodge
Stratus with a 4.863-second pass at 322.23 mph. This held up for No. 1 for
nearly three more pairs until John Force pulled out a 4.857-second run and
until both Tony Pedregon and Whit Bazemore moved past Force into No. 1 and
No. 2.
This placed Cannon solidly in No. 4, after smoking the tires in the first
session.
"The clocks must be wrong," he laughed. "We went out there first round, we
just had it hopped up. For the second run we said we know what used to work,
let's just pull it back kind of halfway in between. Which we did. And,
honestly, it hurt a piston pretty early and it spun a tire pretty bad. It
should've run better. It should've gone .84 at 325.
"We're not known for backing it down any. It just shows every now and then
you can get lucky, I guess.
