Three Mopars Qualify in Provisional Field
Morgan and Johnson Makes Solid Second Runs
LAS VEGAS (Oct. 24, 2003) Moparıs Larry Morgan guided his Dodge Stratus
into the provisional field after the first day of qualifying for this
weekendıs fall NHRA national event at The Strip at the Las Vegas Motor
Speedway. Both Allen Johnson and Darrell Alderman also drove into the top
16.
Morgan clicked off a 6.934-second elapsed time at 199.35 mph; taking home
the 10th-qualified slot. Despite the effort, Morgan felt there was more
available.
³We would have made a lot better run if we had geared it right,² Morgan
said. ³We really have a lot of power here this weekend and I look for us to
go quick enough to get into the top five if the weather cooperates.²
Moparıs Allen Johnson fell in line right behind his factory mate in the 11th
slot. The Tennessee resident, who currently sits fifth in points, maneuvered
his Dodge Stratus to a 6.937-second lap at 199.37 mph.
³I thought my run was going to be good enough to keep us in the top five,²
Johnson said. ³We missed it a little bit down low, but weıre pretty pleased.
We know we have a couple of hundredths left in it, which would have put us
well within the top five. Anytime you get above the 16th guy here in Pro
Stock you have to smile a little bit. I donıt know what the weather is
supposed to do, but it could be a little cooler tomorrow and it should make
it about equal to tonight. The sun will make the track a little slicker.²
Three-time POWERade Pro Stock World Champion Darrell Alderman placed his
Hemi-powered mount into the 13th position with a 6.942-second elapsed time
at 198.88 mph. Alderman came back from a mechanical problem in his
first-qualifying session.
³I told (crew chief) Mark Ingersoll the car felt awesome on that run,²
Alderman said. ³We made a real good run on that last one, especially when
you consider that we had some trouble in round one. Weıll read the computer
and see what we can do to tune it up a little bit.²
Mopar Pro Stock hot shoe Gene Wilson didnıt have a great first day of
qualifying. He has yet to make a complete pass down the track, shaking the
tires during his two runs and shutting it down early.
