Cummins Westport receives additional engine orders

Continues expansion into China

VANCOUVER, Oct. 24 -- Cummins Westport Inc. (CWI) announced today a further expansion into the natural gas engine market in China. Transit services in two Chinese cities have ordered buses equipped with low-emissions engines from CWI.

These orders include CWI's first repeat sales outside of Beijing and entry into an important city. The follow-on engine sales to the city of Xian are a result of meeting customer standards of quality and reliability. The second order represents a new market for CWI with a sale to the city of Chongqing. Chongqing has a population of over 30 million and approximately 5,000 transit buses in service. Fifty-five percent of Chongqing's transit fleet is natural gas-powered, however this is the first time the city has purchased imported natural gas engines. Both cities have ordered new transit buses powered by CWI 230-horsepower B-series natural gas engines.

CWI is fortunate to be able to leverage the Cummins presence in China. Cummins was one of the first US companies to form a joint venture in China and they have an extensive distributor and service network throughout the country. CWI and Cummins are currently evaluating local assembly options for CWI low- emissions natural gas engines.

"China has a very large natural gas supply and developing infrastructure and the country is actively and aggressively pursuing the use of natural gas as a vehicle fuel," said Hugh Foden, President of CWI. "As a result, Cummins Westport has a compelling economic value proposition in China."

Cummins Westport's largest customer in Asia remains the city of Beijing, which has over 2,000 B5.9G engines in transit bus service. The five Chinese cities that have purchased CWI natural gas engines in the last 12 months operate a combined total of approximately 22,000 transit buses.

Cummins Westport, a joint venture of Cummins Inc. and Westport Innovations Inc. (TSX:WPT), develops and markets low-emissions, alternative fuel engines manufactured by Cummins. Cummins is a global power leader in engines, electrical power generation systems and related technologies. Westport Innovations is the leading developer of clean natural gas- and hydrogen-fueled engines.
