CANNON AND HIS TIME BOMB WANT A LITTLE MORE IN VEGAS
LAS VEGAS (Oct. 23, 2003) - Scotty Cannon drove his Oakley Time Bomb Dodge
Stratus Funny Car to his career-best top speed at the Texas Motorplex in
Ennis on Oct. 12, a 325.73-mph pass that surprised even him.
After struggling most of this season to get a new team started, he's been in
test mode the last part of the year, he says, and his goals at the ACDelco
NHRA Nationals this weekend at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway are not
only to continue testing setups and parts. Now that he's making headway and
knows he has a good car under him, he's ready to better his career-best
elapsed time.
"The Strip is a nice track. It's probably one of our premier tracks. Our car
seems to run good here," says the Lyman, S.C., restaurant owner. "I don't
know if it's because of the thin air. It's really high in altitude. I guess
because the air is thin and the track is real good and smooth it gives us an
opportunity to run fast."
Cannon's career-best elapsed time of 4.783 seconds was established at Route
66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill., in the first race of 2001. His best E.T. of 2003
so far also came in Joliet in September, a 4.810. "We're going to try to
improve on our .78 and see if we can run a little more E.T. I'm happy with
the mile an hour, but I wouldn't mind going even faster; we just need to get
the Oakley Time Bomb to run a little better down low."
"That's going to be our game plan," adds the 1999 NHRA Rookie of the Year,
who's 14th in POWERade Drag Racing Series Funny Car points.
Note: In the first Vegas race of 2003 in April, Cannon's best run was a
4.859/321.73.
