Cummins Westport's heavy-duty technology achieves milestones en route to 2010 emissions targets

VANCOUVER, Oct. 22, 2003 -- Cummins Westport Inc. (CWI) announced today that its ISX G heavy-duty engine has been certified to the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Optional Low NOx Emission Standard of 1.5 grams per brake horsepower hour (g/bhp-hr). The ISX G is the lowest- emission truck engine in the 400-horsepower range according to the stringent certification standards of CARB. Additionally, an advanced version of the same engine has recently reached a new emissions benchmark of an ultra low 0.6 g/bhp-hr in a US government agency-funded laboratory test.

"These significant milestones reinforce our leadership in gaseous fuel engine technologies and demonstrate that natural gas can effectively deliver impressive environmental benefits without compromising performance" said Hugh Foden, CWI's President. He added, "Reducing emissions from class eight heavy- duty trucks has the potential to have a considerable effect in reducing North America's transportation-related emissions."

By 2010, the US Environmental Protection Agency standards require new heavy-duty truck engines to reduce emissions of NOx by over 95% and particulate matter by 90% compared to current levels. Advanced reformulated diesel fuel, to reduce sulphur content, will be required in 2006. Because of their inherent advantages in low-emission combustion, the CWI advanced natural gas engines are expected to have lower total cost of operation (i.e. lifecycle cost) than diesel at these very stringent future emissions levels.
