baran-Lista Racing to Use Grand American Finale,
A3 Important Tune-up fer 2004 Rolex 24
LEBANON, Ohio, Oct. 21 - For Doran-Lista Racing, the Grand American
Champions Weekend at Daytona International Speedway Oct, 29-Nov. 1 will be both
an ending and a beginning,
The ending is self-explanatory, as it's the 12th and final race this year in the
Grand American Rolex Series.
But even more importantly for the Lebanon, Ohio-based team this year, it's
also an excellent chance to test its new DORAN JE4 Toyota on the 3.56-mile road
course with an eye towards the first tace of the 2004 season, the Rolex 24 Hours of
Daytona. The 2004 edition af that classic will be held just 13 weeks later, on Jan. 31-
Feb. 1, and the Doran-Lista team would like very much to win that event like it did in
2002.
"Our biggest rac0 of the year is of course the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona, and
this race in November will be a great opportunity to test our car there under actual
racing conditions," explained the team's lead driver, Didier They$ of Scottsdale, Ark.
"We have been doing much better with our DORAN JE4 than our results S ~ O W , and
we hope we will be able to put it all together at Daytana because that would be a
great thing for our team going into the new 2004 season, when we once again hope
to be in a position to run for the championship."

Although the Chey-powered DORAN JE4 of Bell Motorspms ha3 contested
all of the Grand Amsrican races this year and leads the point standings, at Daytona
the Toyota-powered DORAN JE4 of Doran-lista Racing will only be making its fourth
start ever. The Bell Motorsports DORAN JE4 won in its fourth race ever, which may
be a good omen for the Doran-Lista team, which has been a contender in each of its
three previous starts.
Doran Enterprises head Kevin Doran would like nothing better than to see one
of the cars he designed and built end up with the inaugural Daytona Prototype cham-
pionship after the Daytona race, and the other one to end up on the top of the podi-
um for the weekend.
The Doran-Lista DORAN JE4 Toyota #27's maiden race was at Watkins Glen,
N.Y. in August where it led convincingly and finished third. It was leading at Mont-
Tremblant, Quebec In September when its shift linkage broke, but it still finished fifth
in class there. It consistently topped the speed charts at Virginia International
Raceway (VIR) in October and set the fastest lap of the race too. Theys was in s e e
ond place and had just begun to draw a bead on the leader when he had an alterca-
tion with a rookie GT driver, and the team lost six laps to repair the damage before
finishing fifth in class there.
Most insiders believe a victory is imminent.
"Our car was designed with Daytona in mind, and I think for sure we'll be con-
tenders," Theys agreed.

"We have made big improvements in our engine mapping and our set-ups as
we learn what this car likes, and we're maklng gains at every race," he added. "This
will be another important opportunity to continue that work before the Rolex."
Theys' co-driver at Daytona will again be Rill Auberlen of Harmosa Beach,
Galif., who is equally enthusiastic,
"I'm completely excited to go to Daytana and turn our luck around," Auberlen
said the day after the race at VIR.
"Today, the day after VIR, the team is testing, and that is what it takes,"
Auberlen continued. "The engine program is already a step ahead of where it was
in terms of tuning and management; I'm already happy with that. We need to get a
win before the end of the year."
That would indeed and the 3ea30r-1 an a high note far the team, which splh its
2003 season between its Dallara in American Le Mans Series (ALMS) competition
and its DORAN JE4 in Grand American. It has already announced that it will run all
the Grand American events in 2004 and pursue the championship in the top class,
where it has always been a title contender. Theys would also like to repeat as the
driver champion, a feat he accomplished in 2002. Even though he's only competed
in five of the 11 Grand American races held so far this year, he's still ninth in the driv-
er points going into the Grand American Champions Weekend at Daytona.
The track will be open for testlng on Wednesday afternoon, 03.29. Two one-
hour sessions of practice are on the docket the following day at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
