Benson 34th at Martinsville

It wasn’t a very fun day for #10 Valvoline Pontiac driver Johnny Benson on
Sunday at Martinsville Speedway.

Brake problems cost Benson nine laps early in the race and he spent the rest of
the day on the flat half mile track trying to stay out of everyone else’s way.

Benson ended the day in 34th place.

“That wasn’t much fun today,” Benson said. “We weren’t bad except for losing
those nine laps there but once that happens your day is done. We had two really
good practices on Saturday and everyone was pretty pumped up about today, but
it went away pretty fast.”

Benson started the race in 29th and reported immediate brake problems. He fell
down a lap to leader Jeff Gordon on lap 51, but a caution the next lap allowed
him to get back on the lead lap.

Benson them climbed to about 18th when he reported a major problem.

“The brake pedal is solid,” he said.

The car came to the garage and the crew determined the brake pedal had become
bound up inside the car. The crew fixed the problem and Benson returned to the
track in 41st place.

Attrition bumped Benson up to 34th when the checkered flag fell. Gordon won his
second race of the season - both at Martinsville.

Benson and his teammates return to action this weekend at Atlanta.
