Music City Raceway scores back-to-back team championships
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The NHRA Summit Racing Series Southeast Division Finals concluded today at Gainesville Raceway with champions being crowned in Super Pro, Pro, Super Pro Bike and Sportsman eliminator categories. With the conclusion of this event, the roster for the NHRA Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals, Nov. 6-9, in Pomona Raceway in Pomona Calif. is complete.
By virtue of victories at the NHRA Southeast Division Summit Finals, John Wooley, Derek Putnam, Ricky Cook and Phillip Miles are qualified to compete in the "winner-takes-all" national championship finals in November.
In Super Pro, John Wooley of Bonaire, Ga., captured the win for Silver Dollar Raceway. Wooley, who earlier this year won the NHRA King of the Track, defeated Savannah Raceway's Danny Toole of Garden City, Ga., in the final.
Taking home the win in Pro for host track Gainesville Raceway, was Derek Putman of Gainesville, Fla. Putman defeated Atlanta Dragway's Andy Schaefer of Flowery Beach, Ga., in the final round.
In Super Pro Bike, Ricky Cook captured the win and scored the winning point for his Music City Raceway team, which won the overall team title on a tie breaker over New Bama Dragway. This is Music City Raceway's second consecutive team championship and third overall. The two tracks finished the event with 42 round wins apiece, but Music City won the tire breaker, which was Cook's Super Pro Bike victory.
"In the second round, last year's winner, Michael Wilson, let me hold his Division Champion ring," said Cook. "That gave me the motivation I needed to win today. This was a great win for me, and it was great for our team."
The Sportsman final was won by Moroso Motorsports Park's Philip Miles of Boca Raton, Fla., who drove his '01 Corvette to a final round victory over the '66 Nova of New Bama Dragway's Brian Fredrickson of Palm Harbor, Fla.
"This car had 36 miles on it and I took it to the race track," said Miles. "I've been racing for more than 20 years but this is by far my biggest victory."
Along with winning the coveted team championship, Music City Raceway also won the award for Team Spirit.
