Chevre:Island Hotshoe Wally Castro To Compete in Motorock Trans-Am Tour Season Finale in The Puerto Rico Grand Prix

 

LANSING, Mich. - Wally Castro, a well-known and successful road racing
veteran in Latin America and the Caribbean, will compete in the Puerto Rico
Grand Prix, the Motorock Trans-Am Tour for the BFGoodrich Tires Cup season
finale Oct. 24-26.  Castro will drive the No. 3 Puerto Rico Lotteries Jaguar
XKR prepared and campaigned by Rocketsports Racing.

The Puerto Rico Grand Prix event will mark Castroıs second career Trans-Am
race.  His previous start was at the St. Petersburg Grand Prix in 1996.
Driving a Ford Mustang, Castro qualified 10th and was running fifth when a
broken axle relegated him to an 11th-place finish.

³The Trans-Am Tour is very competitive this season,² said Castro, who
currently leads the point standings in the Puerto Rico National Championship
GTS class with four wins and a second-place finish.  ³For me, it is more of
a challenge and itıs very demanding of the driver.

³To be successful, you go to the top, which is why Iım racing with
Rocketsports,² explained Castro, who finished second in the GTS class and
fourth overall in the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series race at
Homestead-Miami Speedway this year.  ³Iıve known Paul Gentilozzi and some of
his crew for a long time; they have a really good program - the engine,
shocks, data, the car - everything. My expectation is to be in the top five
all weekend.  With the good equipment and crew, itıs very possible.²

Last season, Castro was a top contender for the Puerto Rico National
Championship in the GTS class, ranking third while racing only a partial
season and finished second in class in the ³Las 3 Horas Budweiser.²  A
three-time champion of the ³GT Marlboro de las Americas² in Latin America
and the Caribbean from 1994-96, Castro has also won the 1997 Neon Challenge
Championship, the National Championship title in multiple classes, and was
the ³Marlboro Great Champion of the Year² in the Dominican Republic in 1994.

 Castro has competed at the highest level, taking the wheel in the
prestigious Rolex 24 of Daytona with Roush Racing, finishing fifth in the
GTS class in 1995.

Castro was active in go-kart racing in the mid 1980s and then transitioned
to sports car racing, winning the 1990 Puerto Rico National Championship in
the PM-B class.    

Others drivers from Latin America and the Caribbean joining Castro in the
Puerto Rico Grand Prix include rookie standout Jorge Diaz, Jr., Luis Mendez,
Felix Serralles, and Edison Lluch.

The Puerto Rico Grand Prix will air live on Sunday, Oct. 26 on PEE Channel
at 1 p.m.
