Chrysler Group and Chrysler Financial Present the 5th Annual Motor City Boogie Woogie and Blues Festival
DETROIT, Oct. 15, 2003 -- Chrysler Group and Chrysler Financial, a business unit of DaimlerChrysler Services, will join a slate of nationally renowned musicians and their fans this Saturday, October 18, at 7 p.m., to boogie to blues, jazz, ragtime, folk and boogie woogie sounds at the Motor City Boogie Woogie and Blues Festival. The festival, in its fifth year, will be held at the historic Redford Theatre in Detroit.
The Boogie Woogie festival is the main fundraising source for the American Music Research Foundation, a Farmington Hills-based organization that seeks to preserve, archive and promote material relating to American music -- particularly the blues, ragtime, boogie woogie, jazz and rhythm and blues. Boogie woogie music -- the rhythmic, bouncing piano style popular in the 30's and 40's -- is thought to be the link between blues, jazz and rock 'n' roll.
"We have a long tradition of supporting innovative art, music and cultural expression at DaimlerChrysler, but our work doesn't stop there," said Ken Levy, Chrysler Group Vice President of Communications. "Preserving and promoting influential art forms from our past is an equally important and worthwhile endeavor, and we are proud to be involved."
This year's event will feature performances by several well-known musicians, including Henry Butler, Kelley Hunt and the Kelley Hunt Band, Martijn Schok, Caroline Dahl and David Maxwell. The festival will come to a close with an improvisational "train wreck," in which all of the performers come onstage at once and cycle through two grand pianos. Legendary Motown Funk Brother Joe Hunter will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the concert.
"We are pleased to participate with our partners at the Chrysler Group in celebrating the rich cultural heritage and sounds of America," said Dietmar Exler, Vice President - Chrysler Brand Marketing for DaimlerChrysler Services. "As the birth place of Motown and other influential musical styles, our Detroit community is the perfect place to host the festival."
Chrysler Group has a long history of sponsoring art and cultural organizations in the Detroit area. The Company has sponsored several musical festivals and concerts including Chrysler Arts, Beats & Eats, the Concert of Colors, the Warren Avenue Street Fair and the DaimlerChrysler Corporation Fund Dance Series.
