Last Call For Design Entries For South Florida International Auto Show

MIAMI, Oct. 14, 2003 -- Local students who can sketch their dream cars will take a step closer to the real thing at this year's 33rd annual South Florida International Auto Show.

The South East Automotive Media Organization (SEAMO) and Miami's Community Newspapers have organized a concept car design competition for students in grades 10-12 from any high school in Miami-Dade County. The deadline for entries is Friday, October 17, 2003. SEAMO comprises auto industry journalists and executives based in the Southeast U.S.

A panel of designers from the automotive industry will judge entries and choose winners who will receive their awards at the annual press luncheon on November 7, opening day of the auto show. The 1st place winner will get a $3,000 scholarship. Each award will carry the name of the auto manufacturer that funded it. Sponsoring automakers include General Motors, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai and Volvo.

"I think this is a great idea," said Bill Ussery, southeast regional public relations manager for Toyota-Lexus. "It will allow youngsters who have an interest in the automobile industry to explore that interest. It could help them start their careers."

Sage Marie, a regional manager for Honda, cited the importance of "igniting a passion for auto design and filling the pipeline with future talent." A Nissan spokesperson from Los Angeles acknowledged South Florida's proven talent. According to public relations manager Dean Case, "Coconut Grove gave us a very creative designer, Alfonso Albaisa, and he hopes to participate in this event."

Beginning as a child, everyone looks forward to new models from the auto industry, said Lilia Garcia, administrative director for the Life Skills Division at Dade County Public Schools. "This is a great concept for students who aren't easily motivated by the normal curriculum. This gives them something to get excited about."

The South Florida International Auto Show is produced by the South Florida Auto-Truck Dealers Association, which comprises more than 220 dealers in Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Monroe counties.
