Rafael Matos Wins Skip Barber National Championship
MONTEREY, Calif. (Oct. 14) - The 2003 Formula Dodge National Championship Presented by
RACER wrapped up the year at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca October 10 - 11, and while
Brazil's Rafael Matos didn't win either of the weekend's two races, a second place in race one
was enough to clinch the crown over Salvador Duran of Mexico and Matt Jaskol of Las Vegas.
Matos, 22, led the first eight laps, having started from pole, his fourth of the year, but Brian
Frisselle of Hawaii overhauled Matos in Turn Two on lap nine and fended off Matos for the
victory. Frisselle, in an even more impressive fashion, also won the second race of the weekend's
double-header.
The final standings saw Matos on top with 178 points, having taken four poles and three wins
during the 13-race season. Before his entering the FDNC this year, the Brazilian had but five car
races on his resume, having starred in South American karting, and is surely one to keep an eye
on. Duran matched Matos in poles and won twice to end up second, with 157 points. Jaskol
wound up third, two wins and a pole under his belt. Freudenberg (one win), Gelinas (one) and
Bonilla finished fifth, sixth and seventh, while Dominique Claessens, Joey D'Agostino and
Zilvinas Oskutis rounded out the top 10.
Jaskol, along with Gelinas, D'Agostino and David Jurca (14th in the final standings), were all
competing in the 2003 FDNC thanks to their winning paid seats from the Barber-Champ Car
Karting Scholarship program. (Details at www.skipbarber.com)
