PPG Total Service Solutions Lands Its First Chemical And Process Management Contract With Toyota at Mexico Facility

TROY, Mich., Oct. 13, 2003 -- PPG Total Service Solutions announced today that it recently secured its first Integrated Chemical and Process Management program with Toyota Motor Manufacturing de Baja California (TMMBC) for its future manufacturing facility near Tijuana, Mexico. PPG Total Service Solutions will assist the automaker by managing non-core paint shop activities, including all indirect chemicals and product vendors, ultimately reducing the plant's total costs. Initial implementation of the program begins in January 2004 upon completion of the facility.

As part of a three-year contract, PPG Total Service Solutions is responsible for all indirect chemicals for the coatings application process, providing just-in-time delivery of all paint shop products and managing the paint mix room, detackification, pretreatment and electrocoat processes. The team will also oversee filter management and cleaning services.

To support the program, PPG Total Service Solutions will provide the TMMBC facility with a program manager -- who will be a single point of contact for the plant and will manage the tier two vendors -- as well as a full-time, on- site staff that will oversee the day-to-day operations of the program.

"The extensive service program experience and the knowledge of our on-site team will enable the TMMBC facility to focus more of its attention on its core manufacturing activities, helping to reduce total costs," said Scott A. Follett, global director, PPG Total Service Solutions. "With the program in place, the facility can consolidate vendors to simplify the coatings application process and enable the paint line to run more efficiently."

According to Follett, the team will be seamlessly integrated into the facility next year when Toyota opens the plant.

PPG Total Service Solutions currently operates more than 100 service programs in 12 countries around the world.

The only program of its kind to be offered by a global coatings supplier, PPG Total Service Solutions assists manufacturers with implementing turn-key outsourcing programs, such as chemical and fluid management, process management and logistics. In addition, the team offers booth maintenance chemicals, paint detackification products, purge solvents and paint line cleaners and can provide the personnel to launch and implement these products and processes.

PPG Total Service Solutions -- based in Troy, Mich. -- is a leader in providing manufacturers with a cost-effective structured management program that assists in the implementation of a global standard for service.

Pittsburgh-based PPG is the world's leading manufacturer of transportation coatings and a major global supplier of industrial and packaging coatings, and a leading North American producer of architectural coatings. In addition, PPG manufactures flat and fabricated glass, continuous-strand fiber glass and chemicals. Sales were US$8.1 billion for 2002.
