TUCSON, Ariz. - In the final rounds of the NHRA Pacific Division Summit Racing Series Finals at Southwestern Int'l Raceway (SIR), champions were crowned in five racing categories. Nearly 600 of the best racers from across the division came to SIR to compete for individual and team honors in the Pro, Sportsman, Street, Motorcycle, and High School classes.
Speed World Dragway in Wittmann, Ariz., took home the team championship with 131 points. The team's victory was punctuated by wins in three of the five classes. The winners in Pro, Street and High School all represented Speed World Dragway. SIR's team came in second place with 125 points. SIR did have one racer in the final round. Tucson resident Joe Smith made his second final-round appearance of the weekend after winning the Race of Champions in the Motorcycle class on Saturday.
Bryan Downing of Glendale, Ariz., drove his '93 Daytona to the win in Pro and the Street winner was Bruce Meyer of Peoria, Ariz., behind the wheel of his '69 GTO. Speed World's third winner, High School class racer Nick Marconi of Peoria, Ariz., drove his '73 Duster to the win. Sportsman winner, Harlan Tucker of Miranda, Calif., was one of only three drivers representing Redding Dragstrip in California. He was piloting his '67 Barracuda. Salt Lake City resident Kirk Walton rode his '00 Kawasaki to the winner's circle in the Motorcycle category. He was racing for his hometown track, Rocky Mountain Raceway.
The individual winners in Pro, Sportsman, Street and Motorcycle will advance to compete for a national championship against winners from NHRA's other six divisions at the NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif., in November.
