SRFKC - Chiovitti, Launi and Holtom join Sunoco's Team Ultra
94 for 2004
MOSPORT, ONTARIO - The second annual Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting
Championship (SRFKC) presented by Toronto Star Wheels Evaluation Day was
held on Oct 10, at the Driver Development Course at Mosport International
Raceway. The ten standout karters (Justin Mascoll, Jason Robar, Frank
Launi, Tyler Givogue, Travis Walker, Juliana Chiovitti, Jennifer Rempel,
Kris Martin and Rob Oakman) from the SRFKC put on an excellent display of
driving that once again saw Ron Fellows and the Evaluation Day officials
left with a tough decision to pick just two drivers of the ten.
"Another difficult decision making process - more difficult than last
year," Ron Fellows said. "There was a number of new young guys that
displayed an incredible amount of raw talent."
Again this year, it was impossible to pick just two drivers, and Sunoco's
Team Ultra 94 will grow by three members for the second time in two years.
Leading the pack is the 2003 Formula Senior champion, Sutton's Juliana
Chiovitti. Chiovitti never put a wheel wrong all day, and she was focused
and determined on making the team from the first session of the day.
"The pressure next year is to make Sunoco happy and to make Ron and Brad
Brown really proud of us. We just have to make sure we look good for them
and Sunoco," Chiovitti said.
Joining Chiovitti is Innisfil Formula Senior driver Frank Launi. Launi's
raw speed and aggressive style clinched him a spot. "It is a great
opportunity for my new teammates and I," Launi said. "Matt [Champagne] and
Jordy [Vorrath] set the bar pretty high with their one-two finish this year
in the Bridgestone series. I think the three of us are up to the faith that
Sunoco and Ron have put in us. We will do our best to keep the streak alive
in 2004."
The third driver chosen, Ottawa RotaxMax driver Jamie Holtom, was the
biggest surprise of the day. Holtom was invited when one of the ten
originally selected drivers was unable to attend, and Holtom made the most
of the opportunity. Holtom had driven a standard transmission car only once
in his life - the day before. Holtom impressed the panel by getting faster
each session, an incredible feat given his inexperience in cars. ""I really
wasn't expecting it. Before yesterday, I had never driven a car. I think my
dad was more nervous than I was. Really, he was a big help. He had only one
day to teach me to drive a car, and he did the best he could under the
circumstances - thanks Dad."
Fellows talked about what he liked about his three new charges. "Juliana is
very methodical, very quick, doesn't put a wheel wrong. Frankie is very
aggressive, and he's got excellent racecraft. We have to temper that
aggression a little bit, but at the same time it's a lot harder to teach
aggression than it is to temper it - so that's why he was chosen. Jamie
Holtom impressed every single one of us - instructors at the school and
officials - with his ability considering his inexperience at driving a car
with a manual transmission, and with how he was able to start out and
progress through the day - very impressive.
The objective of the SRFKC is to help foster a professional environment for
kart drivers; help create a positive attitude towards appearance, conduct
and discipline; help foster the employment of the best practices for the
safe and fair running of competitions; and help kart drivers to move up the
racing ladder to automobile racing. At the end of the season, eight drivers
will be selected from the series, plus two drivers from the ASN Canadian
National Championships. They will be invited to a one-day evaluation test
at the Bridgestone Racing Academy at Mosport, provided they are 16 years of
age prior to the date of the test. Out of those 10 drivers, two will earn a
full scholarship to the 2004 Bridgestone/FormulaCar Magazine F2000 Racing
Series.
