Weekend Motor Sport Rap-up

It was a quiet weekend, with only three of the majors running, and the season is winding down quickly, but many championships are still being tightly contested. It's also only four weeks until Automotive week in Las Vegas . . . are YOU going?

NASCAR @ Kansas Speedway - Can you say hot streak? Ryan Newman, in the Mobil One/Alltel Dodge, held off a hard charging Bill Elliott to win the Winston Cup Banquet 400 presented by ConAgra Foods. Points leader Matt Kenseth had another tough week, finishing 36th, losing another 95 points off of his season points lead. What was a lock 3 weeks ago is now a quickly closing gap . . . Also at Kansas Speedway, David Green, in The Timber Wolf Pontiac, won his third race of the year, the Busch Series Mr. Goodcents 300. In doing so, he also regained the Busch Series point lead. In the Craftsman Truck John Boy & Billy 250 at Virginia's South Boston Speedway, Dennis Setzer won his third race of the year in the Acxiom Chevrolet.

NHRA @ Maple Grove Raceway, PA - It rained again . . . and shortened qualifying, but the NHRA Powerade Drag Racing Series got it's rescheduled event in! In Top Fuel, Tony Schumacher won in the US Army Dragster, and set a National ET record along the way, 4.41 seconds. In Funny Car, Tim Wilkerson, in the Levi, Ray & Shoup Pontiac Firebird, defeated Cruz Pedregon. In Pro Stock, Warren Johnson, driving the GM Performance Parts Pontiac Grand Am, defeated last event winner Jeg Coughlin, Jr. , driving the Jeg's Mail Order Cavalier.

In Englishtown, NJ, the NHRA Summit Sport Compact Drag Racing Series ran the K&N Filters Sport Compact Fall Nationals presented by Toyo Tires. In Pro RWD, it was an all Streetglow Bullish Racing Toyota Solara final, but it wasn't pretty, as team owner Ara Arslanian left the line before the tree even activated, and George Ioannou redlighted. In Pro FWD, it was an all GM final, with Nelson Hoyos, who has already tied up this year's title driving the Bothwell Motorsports Chevy Cavalier, defeated Lisa Kubo, driving the APC Saturn Motorsports Saturn.

Grand-Am @ Virginia International Raceway - Andy Pilgrim & Terry Borcheller, driving the Bell Motorsports Doran Chevy won the Daytona Prototype class and the VIR 400 overall . Dave Rosenblum, Paul Alderman and Steve Lisa won GTS in the ICY/SL Motorsports/Corvette. Cort Wagner & Brent Martini won the GT class again in the Scuderia Ferrari of Washington/Ferrari 360GT.
