GE Elfun Volunteers Help Build Home for Habitat for Humanity

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn., Oct. 3, 2003 -- More than 80 GE employees from across the Twin Cities will be working in shifts to build a home at 4349 13th Avenue South the week of October 6-10 in Minneapolis as part of the annual Habitat for Humanity home building program. This is the third year that GE Elfun Volunteers have participated in this important community project that provides affordable housing in the Twin Cities.

GE Elfun Volunteers is a global volunteer organization of GE employees and retirees who are committed to improving communities and lives through volunteerism, leadership, and camaraderie. The Twin Cities' Elfun Chapter represents more than 200 active and retired GE employees.

The GE volunteers will be completing interior finishing, trim work and hanging cabinets, according to GE volunteer project leader Steve Kahl. "We look forward to this project every year," said Steve. "It is a great opportunity to support the needs of our community and help families move to a new house."

Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1985. Since its founding, nearly 400 families have purchased Habitat homes throughout Minneapolis, St. Paul and the surrounding suburbs. Every family who buys a home from Twin Cities Habitat invests 300-500 hours of "sweat equity," helping to build their own house and/or other Habitat homes. Twin Cities Habitat then sells them a home at an affordable price using zero interest mortgages. Twin Cities Habitat is currently ranked among the top five U.S. Habitat affiliates in number of homes built.

GE employees participating in the project represent GE Fleet Services, GE Industrial Systems, GE Interlogix, GE Plastics and GE Consumer Finance.
