DC Region Announces 6th Annual 12 Hours at the Point
October 3, 2003: The Washington DC Region of the
Sports Car Club of America announced today that the
6th Annual 12 Hours at the Point would be held on June
4-5, 2004. The longest and oldest perennial endurance
race sanctioned by the SCCA is held on the challenging
two-mile Summit Point Raceway located in Summit Point,
WV. The 12 Hours at the Point, an endurance race for
sports car and sedans, has become a must-do event
among grassroots endurance racers.
For 2004, the Region moved the race from its
traditional date – the weekend closest to June 1 “The
2004 traditional date fell on Memorial Day Weekend and
the Region felt that it would be inappropriate to hold
the 12 Hours at the Point that weekend,” said Gayle
Lorenz, Competition Chair for the Region. According to
Lorenz, “In 2003, the Memorial Holiday weekend fell so
that the race was entirely in May. It’s unlikely that
this will happen again for several years.”
“We’re expecting the number of professionally licensed
drivers to increase this year,” said one Region
official. “The race is getting more prestigious and
teams are starting to bring in some ringers to help
them win.” The Region estimates that 5% of the drivers
held dual club-pro licenses in 2003.
For the third year, the Region is organizing a
contingency prize sponsorship program for the
competitors. The Region expects that many of last
year’s sponsors – which included Kumho Tires,
Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development, BMW North America,
Hella USA and Jiffy-Tite – will be returning and the
Region has letters of intent from several new
sponsors. “The Region organizes this program because
we want to give something back to the competitors and
these companies realize that the superiority of their
products is demonstrated by competing in the 12 Hours
at the Point,” said Jeff Janoska of the Region.
Entry forms will be sent during the next few weeks to
the usual suspects, but will not be accepted until
after January 1, 2004. “We expect to have a full field
of fifty-five by the middle of February,” said Lorenz.
The 6th Annual 12 Hours at the Point will take place
rain or shine and, like all SCCA races at Summit
Point, is open to spectators. Details on the event can
be found on the 12 Hours at the Point website
(www.12hoursatthepoint.org).
