Car Care Council to Assist in Promoting Drive Safely Work Week

BETHESDA, Md., Oct. 3 -- The Car Care Council is joining forces with the Network of Employers for Traffic Safety (NETS) to help promote the Drive Safely Work Week (DSWW) campaign, which runs October 6-10. As part of the campaign, the Car Care Council will be conducting a vehicle check lane for the media on Monday, Oct. 6, 2003 from 9-11 am. The vehicle check lane is being held at the Advance Auto Parts store, 3512 South Jefferson St. in Baileys Cross Roads, Va.

"The fact that nine out of 10 vehicles inspected required some maintenance reinforces the need for the motoring public to become more aware of the maintenance needs of their vehicles," said Rich White, executive director of the Car Care Council. "The potential effects on highway safety, air quality, cost of operation, vehicle performance and vehicle dependability are self- evident from these results."

Currently, there is $62 billion in annual unperformed vehicle maintenance in the United States that is caused by consumer neglect. Recognizing the need to educate the motoring public, the Car Care Council has launched an unprecedented consumer awareness campaign called "Be Car Care Aware" about the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair. The campaign is designed to prepare consumers to make sensible decisions about their vehicles and to make preventative maintenance of vehicles easier and simpler.

Besides making sure your vehicle is properly maintained, there are other ways motorists can make sure they are not distracted when driving. Many of these can be addressed with little or no money. Such things as using a hands free device when talking on a cell phone, taking down items dangling the rear- view mirror and replacing worn wiper blades can make for a much safer trip.

For more safe driving trips and information about preventative vehicle maintenance, visit the Car Care Council's website at www.carcare.org. In addition, as part of the "Be Car Care Aware" education campaign, the Car Care Council is also offering a free service interval schedule to help take the guesswork out of what vehicle systems need to be routinely inspected and when service or repair should be performed. The schedule can be printed for free from the website.
