Delphi to Cut 500 Workers in 2003

CHICAGO October 2, 2003; The AP reported that auto parts supplier Delphi Corp. said Thursday it will cut 500 white-collar jobs, or about 3 percent of its work force, by the end of the year.

On Sept. 30, Delphi contacted workers, offering a voluntary buyout package, according to spokeswoman Paula Angelo.

She said the Troy, Mich., company hopes to get enough volunteers to meet its staff-cutting goal. Otherwise, there will be layoffs.

The job cuts are in line with a previously announced cost-cutting plan aimed at keeping Delphi in the black, Angelo said.

Union employees at Delphi, a spinoff of General Motors Corp., have yet to ratify a new contract with the United Auto Workers.
