Toyota Announces Best-Ever Third Quarter and September Sales in 2003

TORRANCE, Calif., Oct. 1, 2003 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today announced record September sales of 140,754 units, up 10.5 percent, compared to the same period last year, and record third quarter sales of 510,867. September also marks the first time Toyota has surpassed half a million sales in a single quarter. Calendar-year-to-date (CYTD) sales stand at 1,414,009, up 5.3 percent over the same period last year.

"While the first three quarters of the year brought the situation in Iraq, economic uncertainty, and fluctuating gas prices, U.S. consumers held tough and the auto industry experienced steady growth," said Jim Press, TMS executive vice president and COO. "Since sales are product driven and the economy continues to show signs of recovery, we expect industry growth to continue in the fourth quarter as new 2004 models hit dealerships."

The Toyota Division closed out a best-ever September with 121,810 units sold, up 10.2 percent over the same period last year. The Lexus Division also enjoyed a record September of 18,944 units, an increase of 12.4 percent over the same period last year.

Toyota Division light trucks posted a record-setting September with 55,788 units sold, up 12.9 percent over the same period last year. Tacoma compact pickup sales set the pace with 13,033 units sold, up 8.4 percent. The Highlander mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) followed closely with record September sales of 10,043 units, an increase of 14.9 percent. The Sequoia full-size SUV also enjoyed a record September with 5,657 units sold, an increase of 9.4 percent. The 4Runner mid-size SUV posted strong sales of 7,811 units, up 53.4 percent, while the Tundra full-size pickup had sales of 8,165, up 22.9 percent over last September.

Camry continues to be the best-selling passenger car in America and posted strong sales of 33,313 units, up 12.9 percent. The Corolla had a record September with 24,314 units sold, up 14.8 percent over the same period last year.

Scion, the new car marque from TMS, closed out its fourth month of sales in California with 1,631 units despite limited inventory of the popular Scion xB. CYTD sales for Scion total 6,414 units.

The Lexus Division continues to be the luxury brand sales leader with CYTD sales of 186,009 units, up 5.6 percent. The strong month was led by record September light truck sales of 9,473 units, up 67.2 percent over the same period last year. Sales of the RX 330 luxury SUV increased 39.8 percent, with 6,757 units delivered. The GX 470 luxury mid-size SUV posted strong sales of 1,944. The GS 430 sports sedan reported 158 units sold, up 7.4 percent over last September.

Sales of North American-built vehicles accounted for 60.2 percent of total September sales. There were 24 selling days this sales month compared to 23 last September.
