BIMOS2003 - International Auto Show Opens In Pusan South Korea

Bae Keun-min writing for the Korea Times reported that the Pusan International Motor Show 2003 (BIMOS2003), which aims to become the fifth largest car show in the world, will open Wednesday with the participation of 253 companies from 20 nations, including five domestic automobile manufacturers.

On the 39,600-square-meter showroom floor at BEXCO in the port city of Pusan, the international fair will be held under the theme ``AutomobileHarmony of Human, Nature and Technology from Oct. 2-12.

Organizers from BEXCO say the second biannual exhibition will be the largest in scale in Korea and it has transformed itself into a more auto-focused show compared to the previous one in 2001.

Pusan Mayor Ahn Sang-young said local governments of Pusan, Ulsan and South Kyongsang Province jointly prepared the BIMOS2003 to make the regions, known as the center of the Korean auto industry, the focus of the world auto industry.

He also said he will endeavor to make the auto fair the fifth largest in the world as Korea is the fifth largest carmaker.

Five domestic automakers'Hyundai Motor, Kia Motors, GM Daewoo Auto and Technology, Ssangyong Motors and Renault Samsung will introduce their new concept cars and updated models to an estimated one million visitors.

The number of international auto manufacturers participating in the BIMOS2003 will also be up from six in 2001 to 11, including DaimlerChrysler, BMW, SAAB and Toyota, to greet car enthusiasts this year.

Twelve commercial vehicle makers and 225 auto parts firms will set up booths to promote their new technologies and products.

Along with the fascinating cars, a variety of side events and giveaways are expected to attract visitors as well.

Winners of five cars offered by the five domestic automakers, 25 bicycles and other gifts will be given out among the onlookers.

About 60 teams of college students will compete in a race with cars they made, while the Korea Automobile Tuning Association will sponsor drag races during the largest domestic auto fair. A car audio festival, cart race and a number of seminars will also be featured.
