NHRA SUMMIT RACING SERIES FINALS UNDERWAY AT TEXAS MOTORPLEX
ENNIS, TEXAS - Top drivers from 16 racetracks across the South Central division assembled at Texas Motorplex today for the first day of racing in the NHRA Summit Racing Series Finals, which will be held Sept. 26-28. More than 600 drivers from six states are scheduled to compete for team and individual honors, including the opportunity to advance to the NHRA Finals.
Tomorrow’s event includes the prestigious Race of Champions, which will feature the top drivers from each track competing against each other for the title, as well as cash prizes. Other races tomorrow include the High School category, where participants will compete for trophies, and the popular Manager’s Race, where track managers will compete against each other.
Racing action continues on Sunday when drivers in the Super Pro, Motorcycle, No Electronic Quick, and No Electronic Street categories will compete for the opportunity to represent the South Central division in the NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif., in November. One winner from each category will advance to the Finals, where they will be pitted against winners from six other divisions for a national title and a $5,000 pay-out.
2003 Texas Motorplex Pro Champion, Belinda Jenkins, of Dawson, Texas, will compete in the Race of Champions, as well as Sunday’s eliminations. “I’m very excited, I can’t wait,” said the eighteen-year-old racer. Also competing in this weekend’s event is Scott Vest, who was the 2001 Super Pro Champion at nearby Texas Raceway. “What makes the Summit ET Finals so great is the people. I have friends at other tracks, as well as Texas Raceway, and it’s totally different when you get to compete against all of them in a race like this,” said Vest, “We definitely look forward to coming to this race every year.”
A team championship will be awarded on Sunday to the track that earns the most wins overall throughout the day. The team from Texas Raceway, of Kennedale, will attempt to defend their title.
The NHRA Summit Racing Series Finals continue tomorrow and Sunday. Gates open at 8 a.m. on both days with racing beginning at 9 a.m. Texas Motorplex is located on Hwy. 287, two miles west of Ennis between Interstates 35 and 45.
