GM Agrees To Settle 1997 Chevy Cavalier Accident Suit

CHICAGO September 25, 2003; Ann Keeton writing for Dow Jones reported that General Motors Corp. said it has reached a confidential agreement to settle a lawsuit over a fatal accident involving a 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier.

Two people, Lee Anderson, 15 and Timothy Langston, 20, were killed, and Alana Anderson, 16, was injured in Canton, Ga., in April 1997 when the automobile crashed into a tree.

A lawsuit claimed that a defect in the electronic system of the 1997 Cavalier caused the vehicle to speed up uncontrollably.

GM spokeswoman Brenda Rios said the company had expressed its sympathy for the accident victims, but GM "absolutely believes there was no defect in the vehicle."
