ASA History at Nashville Continues in October Finale
Pendleton, Ind. (September 24, 2003) – In the 18 previous ASA Racing Series events
at the .596-mile Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville, some of the top short track drivers
in the country have visited the winner’s circle. ASA’s all-time victory leader Bob
Senneker, inaugural National event-winner Darrell Waltrip and Florida hot shoe Gary
Balough are repeat winners at the Tennessee racetrack, each winning on two
occasions. Fifteen drivers have captured one victory at Nashville in ASA’s history that
stretches back to an event in November of 1981 won by Butch Lindley.
Winning his first of two races at Nashville, Senneker led the final 116 circuits of the All
American 400 in October of 1982. Senneker bypassed seven-time ASA National
Champion Mike Eddy and then finished ahead of Butch Miller, Freddy Fryer, Jim Sauter
and Eddy. Senneker collected $13,435 of the $70,875 in posted awards.
In ASA’s first visit with the newly designed car, Senneker captured his second victory,
pulling away from Eddy at the conclusion of the 250-lap event in April of 1992. Senneker
led on three occasions for 88 laps, powering around Jay Sauter on lap 233 for the final
event lead change. Eddy crossed the line 1.78 seconds behind the race winner with
Johnny Benson Jr. in third position.
Capturing his first victory at Nashville in spectacular fashion, Waltrip won the All
American 400 in October of 1987. The Franklin, Tenn., native drove around four-time
ASA National Champion Mark Martin on the 399th circuit, leading the final laps of the
long distance event. Waltrip led only three laps in the annual short track showdown.
Other race leaders included Mike Alexander, Senneker, Butch Miller and Martin.
Chasing Waltrip across the finish line included Martin, Robbie Crouch, Butch Miller and
Dick Trickle.
Winning his second event at the .596-mile oval, Waltrip held off a hard-charging
Senneker in the June 1991 event. Waltrip took over leadership honors from Mike Eddy
on the 236th lap and finished .21 second in front of Senneker. Eddy placed third with
Scott Hansen and Tony Raines filling the top-five performers.
Celebrating his career-first ASA victory, Balough dominated the All American 400 in
October of 1984. The Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., native led on four occasions for a total of 301
laps. He made the race-winning pass on the 308th go-around, motoring around Mike
Alexander. At the finish, Jody Ridley finished second with Martin, Alexander and Butch
Miller rounding out the top-five finishers.
The second victory for Balough took place in November of 1986, crossing the line .21
seconds ahead of Bobby Dotter and Butch Miller. Balough paced the final 96 laps,
passing pole sitter and leader Mike Alexander on the 305th circuit.
Single-event winners at the Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville include Johnny Benson
Jr., Neil Bonnett, Mike Eddy, Mike Garvey, Butch Lindley, Butch Miller, Mike Miller, Jim
Sauter, Johnny Sauter, Tim Sauer, Dick Trickle and Rusty Wallace.
ASA was involved in three All American 400 events from 1988-1990 that were non-
points events. Butch Miller won the 1987 and 1988 editions with Gary St. Amant taking
top honors in 1989 event.
