PRUETT CAN CLINCH DRIVERSı CHAMPIONSHIP
IN THE MOTOROCK MIAMI 100 - BATTLE BY THE BEACH TRANS-AM RACE
MIAMI - Scott Pruett, driver of the No. 7 Motorock/Jaguar R Performance XKR,
can mathematically clinch his third Trans-Am Driversı Championship in Round
10 of the Motorock Trans-Am Tour for the BFGoodrich Tires Cup. Pruett, who
claimed his two previous titles in 1987 and 1994, needs only to finish fifth
or better in the Motorock Miami 100 - Battle by the Beach on the downtown
streets should his teammate Johnny Miller, who ranks second in points,
collect all 36 possible points.
Pruett won his first title driving a Merkur XR4Ti, and he wheeled a
Chevrolet Camaro to claim his second championship. Should Pruett win his
third title in the Jaguar XKR, heıd join his team owner, Paul Gentilozzi, as
the only drivers to have won three Trans-Am championships while driving
three different marques. Gentilozziıs titles came while driving a Chevrolet
Corvette in 1998, a Ford Mustang in 1999, and a Jaguar XKR in 2001.
The Miami race will be a new venture for Pruett - literally. Not only will
the circuit be new to him, but Pruett will also pilot the Rocketsports
chassis previously driven by Gentilozzi, rebadged as the No. 7 mount.
³Iım up for a new challenge. Iım not a superstitious man,² said Pruett,
referring to taking the wheel of the former No. 3 XKR. ³A car is a car.
Besides, this one carried Paul to the Trans-Am Tour championship in 2001 and
victory lane at the Rolex 24 of Daytona in 2002.²
Lack of familiarity with the circuit doesnıt seem to faze Pruett. ³I just
really like street circuits,² continued Pruett, who has seven wins in nine
starts this season. ³Weıve won on street courses like St. Petersburg and
Denver this year, both of which were new to me.
³Things have gone well for us this year. You donıt change the playbook
coming into Miami when everything has been working so well. Iıve always had
confidence in my team and Jaguar, and itıs been well placed.
³All season long, weıve focused on winning pole positions and winning
races,² explained Pruett, who raced here on the old circuit in 1994,
finishing third. ³Consistency and finishing up front are the ways to win a
championship. If you do that, you donıt have to think about points and the
title hunt.
³If we keep doing the job the way we know how to do it, the championship
will come our way,² concluded Pruett.
The Motorock Miami 100 is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 28.
The race will air on a tape-delayed basis on Friday, Oct. 10 on SPEED
Channel at 9 p.m.
