Whitlock wins spirited CASCAR battle at Peterborough Speedway
PETERBOROUGH, ON - Dave Whitlock won his third CASCAR Super Series race of
the 2003 season, on Saturday night at Peterborough Speedway. The Unitec/NMT
Intrepid driver took the lead with just four laps to go in the 'National
Fast Freight delivers the Leland 200' at the 1/3-mile Peterborough-area
oval and came home almost two-thirds of a second ahead of runner-up Jim
Lapcevich. Peter Gibbons completed the podium finishers in the next-to-last
race of the season.
Super Series veteran Mark Dilley started on the pole and led the first 121
laps, at which point he pitted along with several other front-runners.
Kerry Micks, who won this season's other CASCAR race at Peterborough, in
early June, opted to stay out and assumed the lead on lap 122. And in spite
of losing power steering unit on his UFCW Taurus, with 75 laps to go, Micks
appeared set to make another trip to Peterborough Speedway's victory lane.
But it wasn't to be. In the closing laps, Micks led a single-file train of
cars, driven by Whitlock, Jim Lapcevich, Peter Gibbons and Don Thomson Jr.
Several of these competitors made contact with each other as they furiously
jockeyed to improve their positions. With nine laps to go, Gibbons tapped
Lapcevich and moved to third. And a few laps later, Whitlock got into the
back of Micks' car in turn 1, getting the leader sideways and opening the
door for Whitlock to nab the top spot.
Unfortunately for Micks, the contact with Whitlock wasn't the end of it,
and by the time he was done being bounced backward, he found himself in
sixth-place. Jim Lapcevich went from fourth to second in the final laps,
while Gibbons survived for third.
The championship chase remained virtually unchanged following the 'Nat'l
Fast Freight delivers the Leland 200'. Title contenders Thomson Jr., Micks
and DJ Kennington finished fifth through seventh, respectively. Thomson
will enter the final race of the season - next weekend at Cayuga Speedway -
with an unofficial 55-point lead over Micks as the Home Hardware Chevy
driver attempts to collect his third consecutive CASCAR National
championship, and his fifth major CASCAR title in the past five summers.
Kennington's Snap-On / Castrol Intrepid is third in the standings, 72
markers back of Thomson.
