ARCHIPELAGO/MOTOROLA DRIVER BRYAN HERTA TO START 14TH AT CALIF

JOLIET, Ill. (Sept. 6, 2003) ? Bryan Herta qualified seventh today for the Delphi
Indy 300 in the #27 Archipelago/Motorola Dallara/Honda/Firestone with an average
speed of 221.323 miles per hour.
Herta and the Archipelago/Motorola team were second quick in this morning?s
practice and thought they had found the right setup for qualifying.  As the afternoon
wore on, the temperature increased making the track slick.   Herta was the third driver
to qualify and went out when the track was at it hottest.  As qualifying went on, the track
continued to cool.
Richie Hearn won the ?MBNA Pole Award? in only his second start of the season
with an average speed of 223.159 miles per hour.  Tomas Scheckter was second
fastest with a speed of 223.083 miles per hour.  Felipe Giaffone, who is returning to the
race car after breaking his leg at Kansas, will start third with an average speed of
222.646 miles per hour.   Herta?s teammate Dan Wheldon will start 10th after posting a
lap of 221.053 miles per hour.  Tony Kanaan starts 14th after a lap at 220.006 miles per
hour.
The green flag is scheduled to fly at 2 p.m. EDT tomorrow for the Delphi Indy
300.  The race will be broadcast live on ABC Sports.  A live pre-race show will air on
ESPN2 at noon EDT.

"I'm pretty happy with that lap.  The Archipelago/Motorola car is handling really
well right now.  It has been a long time since we ran this morning and unfortunately we
went early in qualifying.  You want to go late because the track is going to get better
because it is going to cool off.  What we ran in qualifying is about what we ran in
practice this morning so that's okay.  We haven't qualified well at these types of tracks,
so anything up near the top is good."

?We were early in the qualifying draw and the track temperature dropped 20
degrees during the session.  We?re starting near the front, which is what we wanted to
do and if we can run the times in the heat of the day, we?ll be good.?
