ARCHIPELAGO/MOTOROLA DRIVER BRYAN HERTA
NINTH IN CALIFORNIA PRACTICE
FONTANA, Calif. (September 19, 2003) ? Bryan Herta placed the #27
Archipelago/Motorola Dallara/Honda/Firestone ninth in today?s practice at California
Speedway in preparation for Sunday?s 400 mile race before an incident relegated him to
a backup car.
Herta lapped the two-mile oval at 223.408 miles per hour before hitting the turn
two wall in the morning practice session. The Valencia, California driver was unhurt in
the single car accident that happened just 11 laps into the practice session. The
Archipelago/Motorola team was forced to run its backup car during the afternoon
session. In the second practice the team worked to find the proper setup for the car, but
will also look at its teammates? data before qualifying tomorrow.
Herta?s teammate Tony Kanaan was the fastest in today?s practice turning a best
lap of 224.833 miles per hour in the morning session. Honda-powered Roger
Yasukawa was second with a lap of 224.629 miles per hour. Scott Dixon rounded out
the top-three after posting a lap of 224.405 miles per hour. Only seven cars improved
their times during the afternoon session as the track continued to heat up. Rookie Dan
Wheldon was sixth fastest on the day with a best lap of 224.052 miles per hour.
Qualifying for the Indy Racing League IndyCar? Series 400-mile event at
California Speedway is scheduled for 2 p.m. EDT tomorrow, while the 200-lap race ?
which will air live on ABC Sports -- is set for 3:30 p.m. EDT on Sunday.

"It was a difficult day for us all around. This morning was a set back and we just
haven't found a setup that I'm happy with yet. We're going to take a good look at Dan
(Wheldon) and Tony's (Kanaan) notes, then Allen (McDonald, race engineer) and I will
sit down and get the Archipelago/Motorola car running better tomorrow."

?We aren?t very fast and the car isn?t handling well, so things aren?t great right
now. The good news is we have about 24 hours to get it turned around before the
warm-up. In the morning we?ll concentrate on going fast in qualifying which shouldn?t be
a problem. We?ll sit down tonight and get it figured out.?
