NHRA SUMMIT RACING SERIES FINALS UNDERWAY AT BANDIMERE
MORRISON, COLO. – Top drivers from 20 racetracks across the West Central division assembled at Bandimere Speedway today for the first day of racing in the NHRA Summit Racing Series Finals, which will be held Sept. 12-14. More than 500 drivers from nine states are scheduled to compete for team and individual honors, including the opportunity to advance to the NHRA Finals.
Tomorrow’s event includes the prestigious Race of Champions, which will feature the top drivers from each track competing against each other for the title, as well as cash prizes. One winner will be crowned for cars and one for motorcycles.
Racing action continues on Sunday when drivers in the Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman, and Motorcycle categories will compete for the opportunity to represent the West Central division in the NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif., in November. One winner from each category will advance to the Finals, where they will be pitted against winners from six other divisions for a national title and a $5,000 pay-out. A High School category will also be run on Sunday and participants will compete for trophies and scholarship money.
2002 Super Pro Champion, Eric Anderson, of Eau Claire, Wis., had the opportunity of a lifetime last year, when he traveled to Pomona with hopes of becoming the national champion. Unfortunately, his Dragster broke during time trials at the Finals, and he never had the chance to compete. “It was a disappointment, but it was still a great experience and we were very lucky to have the opportunity to go,” said Anderson. “I hope I get another chance.” Anderson will attempt to return to the Finals during Sunday’s elimination races.
A team championship will be awarded on Sunday to the track that earns the most wins overall throughout the day. The team from Brainerd International Raceway, of Minnesota, will attempt to defend their title.
The NHRA Summit Racing Series Finals continue tomorrow and Sunday. Gates open at 7 a.m. on both days with racing beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. on Sunday. Bandimere Speedway is located at 3051 S. Rooney Road; west of Denver on Interstate 470 in Morrison. For more information, contact the track at (303) 697-6001, or NHRA at (626) 688-9714.
