Shane Lewis Returns to Site of First Win
JUPITER, Fla., Sept. 3, 2003 – Shane Lewis, of Jupiter, Fla., will
return to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca this weekend to race in the American
Le Mans Series (ALMS) Monterey (Calif.) Sports Car Championships. Lewis
will be piloting the No. 63 ACEMCO Automotive/Yokohama Tires Ferrari 360
GT Modena in GT class competition with Terry Borcheller of Phoenix,
Ariz. Mazda Raceway holds special meaning for Lewis, a native of
Lancaster, Calif., for all the success that the former California High
School State Bull Riding Champion has enjoyed there. Among his greatest
memories is his first professional race win, the 1994 IMSA Supercar
Championship event held at the 2.238 mile, 11-turn course. Mazda Raceway
has also provided Lewis with several other top finishing positions and
he was a team driver in the Chamberlain GT2 Dodge Viper-entry at the
prestigious FIA Championship finale in 1997. Lewis has driven the ACEMCO
Motorsports silver and yellow Ferrari to six top-ten GT class finishes
in 2003 including a fourth at Trois-Rivières and an eighth at the most
recent ALMS round at Road America. Lewis also charged the team to the
front of the GT field at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June. However, a
mid-race engine failure ended the team’s race while the car was in the
lead.
“Laguna Seca holds a lot of great memories for me,” offered Lewis. “The
IMSA Supercar win is, obviously, the biggest. That is the way to get
your first professional win! I fought with Andy Pilgrim and David
Donohue all day. We swapped the lead back and forth so many times I lost
count. But, I’d love Laguna even if I hadn’t won that race. It’s a
driver’s track. It’s fast, technical and a few spots you just have to
take a deep breath, maybe close your eyes and keep the pedal down. It
also has one of the world’s best known turns in the Corkscrew. It’s just
a great track and I’m looking forward to racing the Ferrari there in
front of a lot of family and friends.”
Shane Lewis is the 1998 Professional Sports Car Racing Rising Star award
winner and is a multiple race winner in IMSA, SCCA Pro and Grand-Am
sanctioned events. He has raced in three 24 Hours of Le Mans, six 24
Hours of Daytona, seven 12 Hours of Sebring and four Petit Le Mans.
Lewis, a regular top-five finisher in ALMS competition, has earned ALMS
podium finishes at Silverstone, the Nurburgring and Portland and is one
of the few drivers with experience in the four major classes of
international sports car racing (LMP 900, LMP 675, GTS and GT). He
drives the ACEMCO Motorsports Ferrari 360 GT Modena in the ALMS and the
Nuzzo Motorsports Mini Cooper S in Grand-Am Cup.
Lewis’ two hour and 45 minute ALMS race will be broadcast at 4 pm (EDT)
on NBC Sports. For more on Shane Lewis please see www.ShaneLewis.com.
