American Honda Posts All-Time Record Sales in August

August sales highlights: * All-time record American Honda sales of 147,253; * All-time record Honda Division sales of 131,049; * All-time record American Honda light truck sales of 51,623; * All-time record Honda Division light truck sales of 46,659; * All-time record Accord sales of 49,098; * Industry-leading hybrid sales of 16,297 year-to-date.

TORRANCE, Calif., Sept. 3 -- American Honda Motor Co. Inc., set a new all-time record for sales in any month, delivering 147,253 cars and light trucks in the month of August, besting the previous record of 137,273 set in August of last year by nearly 10,000 vehicles. American Honda year-to-date sales rose 12.4 percent to 944,719 through August on the strength of Honda passenger vehicles and growing light truck sales.

"What's most important is that we've broken our sales records with practically no incentive spending," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "This clearly demonstrates that our focus on the brand, the products and the customer -- not the deal -- is resonating with consumers."

Honda Division

Record Honda Division sales of 131,049 were driven by best-ever light truck sales of 46,659, up 31.6 percent for the month, along with record sales of Accord, up 5.5 percent to 49,098; and Odyssey, rising 12 percent to 15,998 for the month. In addition, the all-new Honda Element continued to build momentum with sales of 6,835 units, the second best month since its December, 2002, launch. Honda Division sales for the year through August are up 14.8 percent to 831,365.

Honda also continued its leadership in sales of hybrid vehicles in August. The Civic Hybrid had its second best month ever with sales of 2,296 units with year-to-date sales of 15,316 units, making Civic Hybrid the industry-wide hybrid sales leader for 2003. Sales of Honda's hybrid vehicles, the Civic Hybrid and Insight, totaled 16,297 year-to-date.
