Toyota Announces Best-Ever Sales Month - Breaks Record Set Just Three Months Earlier
TORRANCE, Calif., Sept. 3 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported its best-ever sales month in 46 years of business in the U.S. with total August sales of 200,482, an increase of 11.4 percent and breaking the previous mark set just three months ago. The record-setting month also marks the first time Toyota has recorded 200,000 sales in a single month. Calendar-year-to-date (CYTD) sales stand at 1,273,255, up 4.8 percent over the same period last year.
"The rebounding economy was evident in the overall strength of the auto market in August," said Jim Press, TMS executive vice president and COO. "With this fiscal upswing, consumers are economically empowered and they recognize what great cars and trucks are out there right now. The economic upturn will continue to fuel sales as we approach the fourth quarter."
The Toyota Division celebrated its best-ever sales month with 174,072 units sold, up 11.1 percent over the same period last year. The Lexus Division also enjoyed its best-ever month with sales of 26,410 units, an increase of 13.5 percent over last August.
Toyota Division passenger cars posted all-time best-ever sales of 92,791. Camry, the number-one-selling car in America, led the charge with record August sales of 46,575, up 6.3 percent. The Corolla also had best-ever August sales with 35,551 units sold, an increase of 36.0 percent.
Scion, the new car marque from TMS, closed out its third month of sales in California with 1,813 units. The Scion xB recorded 1,159 units sold and continues to attract buyers with its non-conformist attitude and retro styling. Sales of the aggressive and sleek xA subcompact five-door remain steady with 654 vehicles sold. CYTD sales for Scion total 4,783 units.
Toyota Division light trucks set an all-time best-ever sales month with 81,281 units sold, up 12.6 percent over the same period last year. Tacoma compact pickup sales totaled 17,657, up 7.5 percent. The Highlander mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) achieved its best-ever sales month with 15,209 units sold, up 27.2 percent. The 4Runner mid-size SUV posted strong sales of 12,313, up 44.3 percent. The Tundra full-size pickup enjoyed best-ever August sales of 11,485, an increase of 6.8 percent, while the Sienna van had sales of 8,139, an increase of 6.4 percent. The Sequoia full-size SUV recorded best- ever monthly sales of 7,305, an increase of 15.4 percent over the same period last year. The Land Cruiser full-size SUV recorded 597 units sold, up 7.3 percent.
The Lexus Division's record-setting sales month was paced by all-time best-ever light truck sales of 14,039, up 80.3 percent over the same period last year. The newly redesigned RX 330 luxury SUV recorded best-ever monthly sales of 10,430, an increase of 49.4 percent. The all-new GX 470 luxury mid- size SUV posted strong sales of 2,847.
Sales of North American-built vehicles accounted for 58.0 percent of total August sales. There were 27 selling days this sales month compared to 28 last August.
