1 in 29 chance of September registrations being stolen or broken into in the first year of ownership

Milton Keynes, England, September 1 -- Almost 15,000 customers taking delivery of a new car from today, 1 September, could find themselves victims of car crime within the next twelve months according to stolen vehicle tracking company NavTrak.

This is based on The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders' (SMMT) estimate that new cars registered this September will number between 425,000 and 450,000 units. 975,942 cars were reported stolen or broken into in the UK for a 12-month period to mid 2003. This means that over 81,000 cars are stolen or broken into in the UK every month!

"On this basis," says Giles Harridge managing director of NavTrak, "we estimate that of around 425,000 cars being registered this September, there is a 1 in 29 chance that it could be stolen or broken into within the year. Almost 15,000 new car purchasers driving away in their prized new vehicle will become victims of car crime."

"Government Home Office statistics show that 53% of new cars stolen are taken using the owners' keys," continued Giles Harridge "last year's figure of 975,942 stolen or broken into cars highlights the scale of the problem. According to Home Office Car Crime Theft Index 2002, brands most at risk from car thieves are Mercedes, Honda, Toyota, and Mazda with more than 19 cars in every 1,000 stolen."

He concludes "Fitting a NavTrak system into a newly registered car will help stop thieves driving away new vehicles and keep them with their rightful owners."

NavTrak's ADR (Automatic Driver Recognition) system can instantly detect theft of a car even when the vehicles' keys are used, as the system requires a wallet-sized card, kept by the authorised driver, to be present whenever the car is moved using its keys. If it is not, an immediate alert is sent to NavTrak's control centre, which in turn alerts the police and provides real-time tracking of the vehicle.

The system also works throughout Europe, should a car be stolen, or taken, abroad. NavTrak with ADR has a 100% success rate of tracking and recovering stolen vehicles.
