Gibbons wins Delaware Speedway's Great Canadian 300 for a record fourth time

LONDON, ON - Peter Gibbons put on another clinic at Delaware Speedway on
Sunday afternoon in the 'Great Canadian 300'. The Canadian Tire Chevy
driver started 16th in the field of 31 CASCAR Super Series late models and
battled deep in the pack for the first half of the race until he and his
crew were able to make several pit stops, under caution, to transform their
car into contention for the last half of the race. Their efforts paid off
with a record-setting fourth win in the Great Canadian 300.
Gibbons passed UFCW Taurus driver Kerry Micks with 20 laps to go in the
300 lap race and held off determined challenges by Mark Dilley and Don
Thomson to take the win. At the finish, Gibbons won by 0.245 over the
MOPAR-powered NTN Intrepid of Dilley, who missed having a perfect Great
Canadian Race Weekend, by just one finishing position. The Barrie, ON racer
picked up $10,000 for winning the CASCAR Challenge all-star invitational
event on Friday night at Delaware and won the pole for Sunday's race by
posting the fastest time during qualifying, on Saturday.
Thomson's Home Hardware Chevy came home third after being nudged from
second, by Dilley, with two laps to go. In spite of the setback, Thomson's
quest for a third-straight CASCAR National championship was bolstered by
the result. His primary title rivals ran into difficulty on Sunday. Kerry
Micks was forced to park his car, on lap 282, after it was discovered that
his front right wheel was being held on by only two lug nuts. The Mt.
Albert, ON racer finished 20th.
Snap-On / Castrol Intrepid driver DJ Kennington finished sixth after he
lost his front brakes with 30 laps remaining in the Great Canadian 300.
Based on the result, Thomson increased his points lead to 55 markers over
Micks and to 73 points over Kennington, with two Super Series events remaining.
The race was stopped by nine cautions for a total of 75 laps. The official
attendance on Sunday afternoon at Delaware was 9,898, for a three-day Great
Canadian Race Weekend total of 19,830. Prior to today's win, Gibbons had
previously won the Great Canadian 300 in 1998, 1999, 2001.
The next Super Series race takes place Saturday, Sept. 20 at Peterborough
Speedway. Kerry Micks won at the 1/3-mile, high-banked oval, back in May.
