Great Canadian Race Weekend

CASCAR prepares for a busy race weekend at Delaware Speedway

LONDON, ON - Following a two year absence from the Labour Day Long Weekend
race schedule at Delaware Speedway, the CASCAR Super Series will be back in
action at the half-mile London-area oval, this weekend, for the Great
Canadian Race Weekend.
The Labour Day Super Series race at Delaware is one of the oldest
traditions in Canadian stock car racing. Boosting the profile of Sunday
afternoon's 300 lap feature race will be Friday night's 50-lap 'CASCAR
Challenge', as well as Saturday night's CARQUEST 150; the next-to-last
event on the 2003 CARQUEST Sportsman Series schedule.
The inaugural 'CASCAR Challenge' is a non-points invitational event that
will pay $10,000 to the winner. The 20 eligible competitors have earned
their way into the event by either collecting a Super Series pole or win in
the time going back to, and including, last year's Great Canadian 300 at
Delaware Speedway.
Drivers Neil Fair, Steve Robblee, Don Thomson Jr., Dave Whitlock, Kerry
Micks, Peter Gibbons, Robin Buck, Jeff Lapcevich, Mark Dilley, Brad Graham
and DJ Kennington earned the first 11 positions based on those criteria, as
is past champion Sean Dupuis. The rest of the field will be comprised of
the top points contenders, who have not otherwise qualified for the race.
Saturday's schedule at Delaware will include time trials for both the
CARQUEST 150, as well as for Sunday's Great Canadian 300. Steve Robblee,
the three-time and defending CARQUEST Sportsman Series champ, enters the
weekend with a seven-point lead over Quebec's Richard Beauchamp in the
third of four mandatory 150-lap races on the Sportsman Series schedule. The
CARQUEST 150 is scheduled to start Saturday night at 8:00 p.m.
The main event of the weekend, the Great Canadian 300, will take place
Sunday afternoon at Delaware Speedway. The race is the 10th of 12 on this
year's Super Series schedule. Winners of this race earn a prominent place
in Canadian stock car history. Steve Robblee won the 2002 Great Canadian
Race, in what was a rare Super Series appearance for the Dorchester, ON
racer. Entering this weekend's action, Don Thomson narrowly leads his prime
rivals for the championship Kerry Micks and DJ Kennington. Just 58 points
separate these three drivers, all of whom finished on the podium in the
series' most recent race, at Mosport Speedway.
