McDonald's(R) and AAA Launch 'BE AWARE' Partnership for Second Year

SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Aug. 27, 2003 -- McDonald's restaurants and AAA Michigan are teaming up to keep travelers awake and driving more safely during September with their "Be Aware" campaign.

"Our partnership is to remind drivers that they should be especially cautious in areas where children are playing, walking to school and in neighborhoods," says AAA Michigan President Doug Bower.

Until September 30, McDonald's will offer a free, small cup of coffee or Coca-Cola(TM) at any of its Michigan restaurants to those who present the coupon that appears in their Michigan Living magazine.

"We invite all AAA members to stop at a McDonald's restaurant in Michigan to have a Coke or a cup of coffee on us," says John Betts, vice president and general manager of Michigan McDonald's restaurants. "Our children are a precious commodity and we want to keep them safe."

McDonald's restaurants will also be featuring back to school safety tips on table tents throughout the state to remind everyone how important it is to "Be Aware." The coupon offer is good until September 30, 2003.

McDonald's and AAA urge motorists to follow these safety tips:
-- Slow down in or near school and residential areas.

-- Drive with your headlights on -- even during the day -- so children and other drivers can see you.

-- Look for clues such as school safety patrols, adult crossing guards, bicycles and playgrounds that indicate children could be in the area.

-- Scan ahead between parked cars and other objects for signs that children could dart into the road.

-- Practice extra caution in bad weather.

-- Always stop for school buses that are loading or unloading students when red lights are flashing (unless you are driving in the opposite direction on a divided highway).

*Permits one small coffee or small Coke per day with presentation of a valid coupon from Michigan Living magazine. Not valid with any other McDonald's offer or discount.

The Michigan Region consists of 556 restaurants and more than 100 owner/operators.

AAA Michigan is a nonprofit corporation providing safety, travel, recreational, insurance and financial services to 3.1 million members through its affiliated group of companies. The Auto Club is a member of the national AAA organization, with more than 43 million members in the U.S. and Canada.
