Drive Against Diabetes Debuts

New York State Corrections Officer Drives CAT Skid Steer Loader From NY to LA To Raise Money for Juvenile Diabetes

NEW YORK, Aug. 27 -- Juvenile diabetes, a condition that causes a person's pancreas to stop producing insulin, affects more than 1 million children and adults in the U.S. Today, Drive Against Diabetes announced its debut and fund-raising campaign to raise awareness of this disease. The campaign includes a 4056-mile cross-country tour featuring Sgt. Craig Schultz, a New York state Corrections Officer, driving a CAT Steer Loader from New York to Los Angeles.

Why a CAT Steer Loader, whose top speed is approximately 10 mph? Schultz' father, Harold, was an insulin dependent diabetic who lost his battle with the disease in August 1998. Naturally, his father's death had a profound effect on him, and Craig initiated this effort on his own. Prior to becoming a Corrections Officer, Craig owned a landscaping business and received a CAT Steer Loader as a gift from his father. So, to honor his father and those who suffer from Juvenile diabetes, Schultz decided to hit the road ... on a Steer Loader.

The Drive begins Sept. 1 in New York City and continues until Schultz reaches Los Angeles. Schultz will be driving a CAT 236 Skid Steer Loader donated by Caterpillar.

Proceeds from the Drive Against Diabetes Campaign go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF). For a listing of towns and cities along the route, please visit www.driveagainstdiabetes.com.
